How do blockchain technologies influence consumer behaviours? A multimethod study

Blockchain has received heightened attention from business community due to its profound effects on how an organization manages supply chains and creates value for consumers. The objective of this study is to empirically investigate how blockchain technologies affect consumer behaviours. This study adopts a multimethod approach and a sequential explanatory research design is used. Data was collected from an e-commerce platform and its clients in the four food industries (i.e., milk powder, alcohol, seafood, and nutrient). We first conducted a quantitative research. We collected the data on sales volume and product return rate from 415 SKUs (78 traced SKUs and 337 control SKUs) in a time range of 52 weeks. A difference-in-difference test of treatment and control groups is conducted. The results show that the application of blockchain technologies improves sales volume and reduces product return rate. Then, we conducted the qualitative research. We have selected one client in each product category who has adopted the blockchain tracing system. Thematic analysis is conducted to investigate how the adoption of blockchain tracing system creates value for consumers. The findings enhance current understandings on the performance outcomes of blockchain technologies and open the black-box of the mechanisms through which they influence consumer behaviours.
